The War Against SEO..
While Altavista is being pillaged and bombarded with spam, it fights back in 1998 and 1999 by banning huge amounts of sites which have automatic doorway page generators. Other search engines follow their lead and declared war on search engine optimisation by banning sites which even mentioned any part of that now dirty acronym – SEO.
Some search engines still employ this tactic and as a result many search engine optimisation companies refused, and still refuse, to link their websites with their clients’. With search engines becoming more aware of how they were being manipulated, algorithm crackers worked harder than ever in 1999 and were still only able to achieve half of the rankings they could a year before.
Decoding how the top ten listings are determined in search results has never been harder. And Google is still coming out on top as their PageRank works wonders while other search engines fall into the all consuming obscurity which only bad management and even worse debt can invoke. Google uses its Hubs and Authorities model to weed out the junk sites and come up with results for the core sites in each keyword sector.
In late 1999, all that had been learnt about search engine optimisation and algorithm decoding is discarded as more and more search engines clear out the trash. This was also the time when the internet was becoming part of people’s routines and news websites gained popularity and people who were simply exploring the web and using the search engines to see what they could see, dropped off.
As we know, in 2000 the world didn’t collapse in on itself as we all expected but Infoseek does disappear. More banners and pay per click advertising is used in 2000 to diversify the reach. Internet users are also more savvy and look to use a search engine which can actually find them useful information as quickly and easily as possible and Google gets another boost.
