Search engine optimisation (SEO) may seem like just the newest phenomenon to help market your business, but it has actually been around, in one form or another for well over ten years. But as with any technology or marketing plan, SEO has evolved from almost unrecognisable origins.

In the early days of the internet and search engines, Yahoo was the big player. Around 1995 optimisation began in a way which mimicked the alphabetised yellow pages system. Into 1996, keywords were used on a trial and error basis where website technicians would just stick in keywords until they saw the response they wanted. Yahoo would even list almost any site which was submitted to it, as long as it wasn’t too gaudy.

Later that same year though, SEO began to grow a little in sophistication as the first murmurs and research on text matching and data mining started to emerge. Interview with search engine programmers revealed the importance of the link between databases and website text, and search engine optimisation began to realise this could be manipulated to the business’ advantage.

Then in 1997 the magnificent men and their little machines appeared and were able to decode the algorithms which the search engines used to asses website pages. Generally the crackers studied the pages which ranked at the top of the results and were often able to recreate websites and web pages which precisely matched what the algorithm was looking for. An SEO formula!

In late 1997, many other search engines began to look at Yahoo for quality assurance of the sites they were ranking and so, of course, Yahoo became the place to be. But as a result Yahoo was flooded with submissions at this time and probably only processed around 5% of those received in 1997 and 1998.
