Optimisation or Optimization..

So are you after search engine optimisation or search engine optimization? Well, it depends on which part of the world you come from but don’t worry because we won’t hold your spelling preferences against you, and anyway – they’re the same thing.

Well basically the same thing. As with any product or service it changes and adapts slightly depending on its market – where it is in the world. So SEO is likely to differ slightly in the UK to how it is done in the US, but the concepts and ‘secrets’ are basically the same thing.

The spelling differences between optimisation and optimization date back much further than the concept of SEO alone. In the early 18th century English spelling was not standardised, but no one really noticed the variations in spelling until the first dictionaries were published. In 1755 Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language was published and current English spellings – like optimisation – follow this model.

Further down the track in 1828, An American Dictionary of the English Language was published by Noah Webster and while he was not responsible for the creation of many of the different spellings, his dictionary did typify American English – spellings like optimization for example.

In cases like organize and recognize, American spellers will use a ‘z’ where we would spell these words as organise and recognise – so too comes the differentiation between optimise and optimize. However, many British media sources prefer to use the American spelling preferences and it was only recently that the Oxford English Dictionary began to list the ‘s’ forms of words as an alternative.

So what does all of this mean for your search engine optimisation? Not really very much when the concept in the same regardless of how it is spelt and we can tailor SEO systems for your website regardless of which dictionary you refer to.
