Earlier as a search was generated by the browser, the search engines sent their spiders (special program) crawling to the website to download the page and store it on their server. Another program called the indexer extracted information such as keywords, location links on the page indexed for later crawling .The search engine software sifts through the millions of indexed pages to match and rank search.

The obvious question that crawls to mind is that how do these spiders know where to look for the relevant informant especially when the task is of crawling through millions of web pages? An Algorithm provides the answer.

An Algorithm is a complex mathematical set of instructions used to compute data. Each search engine has its own algorithm and follows rules to generate results. They have their set of rules for determining the location and frequency of keywords, The HTML Title, words on top of pages, subtitles, paragraph heads and all words in the beginning of web site content. Also, the frequently the keyword appears in the text, greater are the chances of a higher rank.

Search engines determine their ethical practices and ban all sites that deliberately manipulate frequency of keywords in text without relevancy. Another factor is linking. The links that are relevant and ethical also create an environment for spiders to crawl. The positioning of keywords also attracts crawling.

Search Engines might not be able to crawl inside a site if the image map improperly linked to the inside pages. Hyperlinks on home pages are easier to crawl than when inside pages. Site maps also help. Inbound links also help crawling easier. Spamming is the biggest block for search engines and results in a ban.

A search engine may be crawler-based like Google or human-powered like Open Directory.  Where changes in the prior  do not effect the listing in the latter. MSN or LookSmart are hybrids. Crawler-based results are provided for less obscure queries.
