For the search engine optimisation firms which relied heavily on running their clients’ websites through their algorithm software to achieve highly ranked websites found themselves behind the eight ball in 2002 when the search engines changed the way they were going to be used.

It was then that search engine optimization companies found they had to work directly on their clients’ websites to achieve the best results and many companies found their algorithms and software couldn’t adapt fast enough. However, there were plenty of SEO companies who could and they worked to create quality websites where the information was more important than the flashy graphics.

Into 2003 the companies who were seeing their carefully programmed and algorithm reliant websites fall off of the search engine rankings resorted to using pay per click advertising to direct the necessary traffic to their websites. Pay per click advertising was used more and more by SEO companies who weren’t able to produce the correctly optimised websites for their clients and so they rebranded themselves as search engine marketing companies and pushed along the pay per click bandwagon.

It was also in 2003 that Altavista was sold, and then resold and Google dominated the search engine choices. While Google emerged when other search engines were slow, ineffective and unwilling to adapt, it had been the saving grace of the search engine optimisation industry as it was the only one which got the results. But in the early naughties, the SEO industry was also severely diminished as the companies which couldn’t adapt to produce the types of sites Google wanted to see, were cast aside.
